The Bay Street Bastards let rip (and get round “that word” nicely!)
I thought of you when they closed down the school
And the hospital too
Did they think that you were better?
They were wrong
But I will see you baby when the clans rise again
Women and men united by the struggle
Going down
In this free world
A tribute to Marie Fredriksson, lead singer with Roxette in the 80s. Here is her solo version of Anna McGarrigle & Philippe Tatartcheff’s ‘Complainte Pour Ste. Catherine’ (as ‘Ingen Kommer Undan Politiken’ with Swedish lyrics by Ola Magnell) released in 2006.
Chris Pearson stakes his claim to breaking Fairytale of New York to the public back in 1987 … interview on Manx Radio.
The Irish Mirror reports that RTE will also pay a tribute to the Pogues singer, 61, with friends and family joining Shane in the studio to perform a number of songs including Fairytale of New York.
Host Ryan Tubridy said on last week’s show: “What we Irish are very good at is making music, and next week it’s our privilege to pay tribute to one of the very best, Shane MacGowan, musician, songwriter and front-man of The Pogues.”
“Shane and a host of stars will take to the stage to perform Fairytale of New York, as well as many other gems. In the lead up to Christmas on The Late Late Show, it promises to be a session like no other!”
Fingers crossed.
Jona Rich reminds us of Madison on TOTP. Always worth digging this one out!
According to lovin.ie, Britney Spears turned down chance to cover Fairytale of New York with Robbie Williams. He was hoping to cover the Christmas classic and reached out to Spears to perform the female vocals in the duet – only for the American pop star to decline.
“I asked Britney to duet with me on Fairytale of New York,” Williams explained. “She said no. What a lovely story. She’s not working right now. Maybe it’ll happen in the future.”
Shane MacGowan has apparently given his blessing for Williams to cover it.
