In a weird new development where the charts the week after Christmas are almost 100% festive, Kirsty and the Pogues benefit by rising to No. 4, the best chart placing for Fairytale for 12 years! It is denied an unexpected belated rise to the top spot by Wham’s Last Christmas, the eternal Mariah Carey with All I Want for Christmas is You (also denied its first number one spot) and, days after it featured as our Christmas post, Ellie Goulding’s cover of River by Joni Mitchell is the last Number One of the decade.
