Messages from Kirsty's fans & friends : 8 - 15 January 2001

Monday 8 January 2001

There aren't enough words to give Kirsty the tributes she deserves. I think that if I have a memorial service, I would want something informal, where my friends could talk about me until they run out of words. That's what we're doing for Kirsty, who was a friend in the way that a favorite singer who touches your life with her art can be. What sticks in my mind, besides the work and the voice, of course, is the picture of Kirsty the first time I saw her in concert in San Francisco, CA, on the "Titanic Days" tour. Gorgeous in a William Wegman T-shirt. I was surprised to read later that she'd struggled with stage fright, I never sensed it. I'll miss the albums she will never make. She was the best.

Dear Kirsty

I found out the news on the Nottingham Forest fans forum on 19th Dec. I have had a little cry almost every day since. They Don't Know is mine and my wife's special song, we still have it on a beautiful picture disc. December 18 is my birthday. It just won't be the same in future. If there is a god give him one on the nose from me.

Love and sympathy to family and friends,

I only had become aware of Kirsty MacColl's music in recent years. I was hooked from the moment I heard "Days." Here was a lady whose music I could really relate to: inspirational and thought provoking. She had a wonderful ability to connect with peoples feelings through her music. It was not only the lyrics that I thought were brilliant, the melodies had a special quality to them as well, they were well constructed and as a pianist, I found them really enjoyable to play. It knocked spots off all the commercialised chart music you hear today, unlike that I am sure her music will not be so easily forgotten.  Like many others, I was the only one of my friends who had heard of her, so it is really good to read all the tributes and find others felt the same way I do and, although I never met her I feel I will miss not only her music, but her ability to be a great human being whose attitude is a great example of how to live: putting others before yourself.  Rest in peace Kirsty
