Karen O’Brien is a news editor for the BBC World Service in London. As a news journalist, she’s worked in print, radio and television, including the BBC and Reuters. She has written and broadcast widely on the arts, with a particular passion for music. Her previous books include Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light (Virgin, 2001) and Hymn to Her (Virago, 1995), a collection of writings on women musicians, including Kirsty. She is a New Zealander by birth and a Londoner by choice. Karen wrote the biography Kirsty MacColl: the One and Only based on interviews with Jean MacColl, Hamish MacColl, James Knight, Steve Lillywhite, Bono, Billy Bragg, Lu Edmunds, Pete Glenister, Phill Jupitus, Rob Miller (Cuba Solidarity Campaign), Frank Murray, Brian Nevill, Mark Nevin, Philip Rambow, Dave Ruffy, Peggy Seeger (Ewan MacColl's second partner), Fred Shortland, David Stark, Jon Webster (Virgin executive in 1991), Matthew Westwood (friend) and Chris Winwood (organiser of the Bench in Soho Square).
Percussion on In these shoes?, Here comes that man again and Não Esperando. Back in 1991 he appeared on an album by Phil Manzanera in the company of Chucho Merchán, Phil Todd and Guy Barker.
Enrique was another who played on David Byrne's Rei Momo before contributing cello to My Affair.
